Religion and Naturalism: The Rea-Dennett Exchange

This 2003 exchange between Michael Rea and Daniel Dennett has drawn a lot of attention. For those of you out there really into these sorts of debates (you know who you are), check out this short but interesting dialogue.

One Response to Religion and Naturalism: The Rea-Dennett Exchange

  1. Daniel Nairn says:

I appreciate your link to this dialogue. I had never heard it before.

It seems to me that even if Dennett is right in saying that he has no wish to actually supress what he considers false belief (unlike radically dangerous fanaticism), it is still a far cry from actually respecting such a believer. And it was respect for athiests that he was demanding – they already clearly have tolerance. I suppose “respect” is pretty subjective, but I don’t feel particularly respected by what I’ve heard him say.
